Becoming the Person, You Want to Be

Confidence is something many people wish they had more of.

Whether it's joining a gym for the first time, speaking up in a meeting, applying for a new job, setting boundaries, or simply believing in yourself, confidence often feels like the missing piece.

Many people wait until they feel confident before taking action.

But what if we've got it the wrong way around?

The truth is, confidence doesn't usually come before we do something it comes because we did it.

Growth begins the moment we're willing to take that first step, even when we're unsure of ourselves.

What Is Confidence?

People often think confidence means being fearless, outgoing, or never doubting yourself.

In reality, confidence is much simpler.

Confidence is trusting yourself enough to take action despite uncertainty.

Confident people still experience fear.

They still make mistakes.

They still have days where they doubt themselves.

The difference is that they don't allow those feelings to stop them from moving forward.

Confidence isn't about knowing you'll succeed.

It's about believing you'll learn, whatever the outcome.

Growth Starts Outside Your Comfort Zone

We naturally gravitate towards what's familiar.

Our routines feel safe because we know what to expect.

But staying comfortable all the time often means staying exactly where we are.

Growth happens when we gently challenge ourselves.

That challenge doesn't have to be huge.

It might be:

  • Walking into a gym for the first time.

  • Saying yes to an opportunity you've been avoiding.

  • Having a difficult conversation.

  • Asking for help.

  • Trying something new.

  • Setting aside time to look after your own wellbeing.

Every small step expands what feels possible.

Before long, what once felt uncomfortable becomes part of your normal.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

One of the biggest barriers to confidence isn't other people.

It's the conversation happening inside our own heads.

You might recognise thoughts like:

"I'm not good enough."

"I'm too old to start."

"Everyone else knows what they're doing."

"I'll probably fail anyway."

These thoughts feel convincing because we've repeated them so often.

But thoughts aren't facts.

One of the most powerful things you can do is begin questioning those stories.

Ask yourself:

"Is this actually true, or is it simply something I've come to believe?"

Sometimes changing your life starts with changing one sentence in your mind.

Progress Builds Confidence

Many people think confidence creates action.

In reality, action creates confidence.

Every time you:

  • Keep a promise to yourself...

  • Finish something you started...

  • Learn a new skill...

  • Face something uncomfortable...

  • Recover after a setback...

...you build evidence that you're capable.

Confidence grows through experience, not perfection.

It isn't built overnight.

It's built one decision at a time.

Comparing Yourself to Others

It's easy to compare yourself to people who seem further ahead.

Social media makes this even harder.

We often compare our everyday life to someone else's highlight reel.

But comparison steals something important it takes our attention away from our own progress.

Instead of asking:

"Why aren't I where they are?"

Try asking:

"Am I further ahead than I was six months ago?"

Your journey is unique.

The only person you need to compare yourself with is the person you were yesterday.

Growth Isn't Always Comfortable

Personal growth sounds exciting.

Sometimes it is.

Other times it looks like uncertainty, frustration, setbacks, and learning.

That's completely normal.

Every skill you've ever developed started with being a beginner.

Every confident person has experienced moments of self-doubt.

Growth isn't about avoiding failure.

It's about becoming someone who keeps going despite it.

A Coaching Perspective

One thing I've learnt through working with people is that they usually underestimate what they're capable of.

They focus on everything they haven't achieved while overlooking how far they've already come.

Sometimes all that's needed is someone to help you see your strengths, challenge your limiting beliefs, and keep you accountable as you move forward.

Growth isn't about becoming someone else.

It's about becoming more of the person you're capable of being.

Take a Moment to Reflect

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What have I achieved over the last year that I'm proud of?

  • Where am I allowing fear to make decisions for me?

  • What's one thing I've been putting off because I don't feel confident enough?

  • What's one small step I could take this week?

Remember, you don't need to see the whole staircase.

You only need to take the next step.

Final Thoughts

Confidence isn't something you're born with.

It isn't reserved for a lucky few.

It's built through small moments of courage, repeated over time.

Every challenge you face, every lesson you learn, and every small victory helps shape the person you're becoming.

So don't wait until you feel completely ready.

Start before you feel ready.

Growth begins with action, and confidence follows.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

If you've been feeling stuck, doubting yourself, or unsure where to begin, you don't have to figure it all out on your own.

Sometimes having someone alongside you to ask the right questions, offer support, and help you stay accountable can make all the difference.

If you're ready to start building confidence, creating positive habits, and making meaningful progress, I'd love to help.

Reach out for a conversation and let's explore what your next step could look like.
